How to buy a used car or truck:

Upper Island Motors, including sales people and sales managers are licensed and monitored by the Motor Dealers' Council of British Columbia (MCD). You can ask to see proof of licensing which is hanging on our wall like a business license.

Upper Island Motors put their vehicles through a safety inspection of up to 150 points. Anything less than a 50 point inspection is not satisfactory. Any reputable dealer will take care of any necessary repairs and maintenance updates.

If you are going to buy a car privately, make sure you take it to a repair shop or garage for a proper inspection. It could be the best $50-$89 you will ever spend.

Before you make your next used car or truck vehicle purchase, make sure that the seller - whether a franchised lot, used car dealer, or private seller - fully discloses the background of the car. Ask to see an ICBC damage search, a lien search and a safety inspection by a certified automotive technician. These are all costs to the seller and if they can not be provided, do not buy the car.

It is always a good idea when buying a pre-owned car or truck to purchase an extended vehicle warranty. All Upper Island Motors used car or trucks have been safety inspected and carry a 30-day exchange warranty. Buying an extended warranty contract is a big decision. A manufacturer's warranty is usually valid at any franchised dealer of the same brand in North America.

Purchasing a pre-owned vehicle from a used car or franchised dealer should come with some sort of warranty if it is out of the manufacturer's regular warranty - given that the age of the vehicle and mileage are within reasonable criteria. Remember, some vehicles can be simply too old or have too much mileage to come with a warranty. It is a buyer beware situation, just as it was when the dealer took it on trade or purchased it.

If you plan on financing your used vehicle purchase, Upper Island Motors can present more attractive financing or lease options in most cases - depending on the age and mileage of the pre-owned vehicle.

MYTH: if you live in a smaller community you can get a better deal out of town.

TRUTH: there is more selection, which may mean better prices in larger centers. BUT, dealers in smaller towns will know the history of the cars on their lot and can offer better reconditioning and better service. Their inventories usually offer vehicles in better condition with lower mileage. You will have better piece of mind and continued support buying from a dealer that you know and trust.

Take the car for a good test drive, ask questions, check the history, and do your homework! If you have a trade, concentrate on the dollar difference that you will actually pay, not the trade value. In British Columbia you pay taxes on the difference. If the trade is worth 20% or more of the new purchase, you can be confident that the tax savings will make the trade a good option for you.

Check out the cleanliness of the dealership, the appearance of the sales staff, the tidiness of the lot, and the cleanliness of the cars. The appearance of the business is a good indicator of the level of professionalism and service that you will receive before, during and after the sale.
